Coudal Partners' Field Notes

Like many other web developers / hipsters / musicians I carry my trusty Moleskine pocket notebook wherever I go.

It’s a great resource to have handy when inspiration strikes for a new design, painting, or idea I need to capture.

For those not in the know, the Moleskine is a popular notebook / sketchbook that’s been adopted by creative types everywhere since its release in 1998.

It’s basically just a fancier, smaller version of the Trapper Keeper you had when you were in school.

It seems Coudal Partners and Draplin Design Co. have spotted this trend and come up with their own brand of the notebook they’re calling Field Notes.

Field Notes appear more rugged and somewhat slimmer than my trusty Moleskine. Perhaps slender enough to even fit in most of my jeans pockets.

You get 3 Field Notes for $9.95, which is a good price compared to the relatively expensive Moleskine.

I’ve had a sip of the Kool-Aid and it tastes good. I’ll be placing my order shortly…

Turn your Nintendo DS into a sketchbook, or audio sequencer

One of my favorite toys is the Nintendo DS.

The abundance of side scrolling, pixel-based video games on the system initially attracted me to the platform, which I’m a complete sucker for.

A few days ago someone put me up on Colors, which is a digital sketching / painting program for the DS.

Nintendo DS Colors Paint Program

To use Colors, it seems you have to have a homebrew capable card loader. Tonight I ordered a DSTT, as this Wired article on Colors mentions.

Can’t wait to install colors, and NitroTracker, and this scratching program.

Maybe I’ll have some fun things to share with you all soon.

I called it...

An industry is popping up for items that help you keep your iPhone smudgeless.

Didn’t I call this months ago?

Typographic Synthesizer

So many toys, so little time…

Check out this typographic synthesizer.

Meek FM is an interpretation of type as sound. Using new software and the M.E.E.K. typographic synthesizer, the musician/designer develops sounds and typographic visuals in parallel.

Cool…

Apple's iPhone. What about the smudges?

The iPhone looks like a wonderful device. Beautiful, stunning, simple, elegant design. I’m even considering picking one up.

But don’t get it twisted… My major problem with the design of this (and all large-touch screen input devices) is that keeping it clean and looking nice is going to be a major pain in the ass.

Apple iPhone

I’m a current owner of a Treo 680. I’ve owned pretty much every Treo model in existence since they were created, and a lot of Palm/Handspring devices before that.

My main problem besides trying to keep dust out from underneath the screen is keeping the screen oil-free from my fingers and my face. Not that I’m a particularly oily person, I’d consider myself normal…at least in that respect.

It’s a constant struggle to keep the screen clear of such mess, and after awhile it builds up and even the best cleaning won’t remove accumulated scratches, smudges and streaks.

I can’t imagine keeping a screen clean where it’s the primary source of input. At least on the modern-day Treos you can enter pretty much anything via the keyboard and the 5-way input button.

I’m interested to try out the iPhone, like everyone else. I’m sure Apple is going to make a killing selling the thing, but I think there’s real money to be made selling cleaning products for it.

Who’s with me? All my people with OCD stand up.

Update

One thing on my mind I forgot to mention is the lack of tactile feedback.

It’s gotten to the point where I can type without looking at the keys on my Treo. Very useful for sending email and text messages, or just browsing the web.

The lack of tactile feedback (the click when you push a key / button) is going to lead to problems I’d imagine.

I’m still excited about the phone, but not without reservations.

Back on track

Apologies for the downtime. The Sublog is back in business.

We’ve been hard at work on a new Rails site for eDeals.com. Expect a writeup soon with information about how we go about processing over 2 gigs of external data daily with Ruby.

PS: Is anyone excited that us poor GSM users finally get a new Treo? My 600 collects more scratches every day. Oh yeah, and the new Google Maps program for Treos isn’t too shabby either.
