Playing web pages as music
One of my favorite blogs has a crazy piece today about playing the NY Times web site, musically.
All the magic happens with a Firefox extension called Lily, which takes its inspiration from modular audio patching software like Max/MSP.
When the patch starts, the browser enters a DOM inspection mode and mousing over a DOM element highlights the node. Clicking on a node writes the element’s data (its innerHTML value if it’s a text element or the binary data if it’s an image) as a sound file and the file is then loaded in a quicktime player in the patch. The sounds can then be triggered using OSC messages.
Finally found a use for the NY Times from Bill Orcutt on Vimeo.
Some other great video examples are on the Lily blog, including this interesting SVG audio sequencer.

Free DJ mixes for the end of the week.
Go check out DJs Anonymous for some ruthless music.
I’m currently blasting the dubstep mix #29 at full volume. The track at 34 minutes is pure evil.
Your neighbors will want to hear…
Jam this in your speakers...
Hey it’s almost the weekend. I know you’re all working hard out there just like me.
Might as well have some new music to listen to right?
Check out my new favorite internet radio station.
Any station that has an ED-209 look alike with a set of massive headphones on for a mascot has to be good.
Typographic Synthesizer
So many toys, so little time…
Check out this typographic synthesizer.
Meek FM is an interpretation of type as sound. Using new software and the M.E.E.K. typographic synthesizer, the musician/designer develops sounds and typographic visuals in parallel.
Cool…
I was up above it...
...Now I’m down in it.
I’m sitting here listening to old music I have on my computer while I work. It’s nuts that NiN made pretty hate machine in 1989 and it sounds this good…
“I made Pretty Hate Machine using a Mac Plus, an Emax keyboard and a Mini Moog,” says Reznor. “That set up was cool because it was so limiting that it forced you to get the most out of what you had to work with. It was just basic MIDI, with no digital audio. But I knew the three pieces of gear I had inside and out,” he adds.
Thought for the day…limits force you to be creative.
Disgusting Moog Ads....
Anyone who’s listened to music in the last 20 years or so has heard a Moog Synthesizer. They’ve been used on countless records, from rap to pop and back again.
That being said, what the fuck is going on with the new ad campaign from Moog? It features audio patch cords impaling various objects and living creatures.
Is this telling me I can make aggressive music if I buy a moog? That poor dog…
Pop music?
Uhhhhh?
Anyone care to guess?
